Orifice tubes serve as the divide between the high and low pressure sections of the A/C system. An orifice tube is a very simple component with no moving parts, and allows refrigerant to flow through its fixed diameter tube. Orifice tubes are built application specific per OEM size and color. Since they act as a refrigerant filter they can become clogged with debris, so it is a good idea to replace them whenever the system is opened up. This tube contains necessary o-rings and gaskets necessary to seal high pressure from low pressure.
This tube is made using injection molded color coded plastic for easy identification, and is blue (.067) in color. Ford also used other size orifice tubes during the same year span, so it is sometimes necessary to remove the orifice tube to be sure what color you need. Since they are inexpensive many choose to order several different sizes at the same time so they only have to open up the system once. They are inexpensive locally too, so if this isn't the right one you can probably get one that way. TIP: Sometimes old orifice tubes become stuck in the metal refrigerant line, and are difficult to remove. You can carefully use a heat gun on the line, after the system is open and all refrigerant has been removed, to help loosen it up. Make sure to shield the evaporator box, as a good heat gun can melt it.
